Water is the basis of all life and is of crucial importance for agriculture, drinking water supply and hygiene on our farm in Ethiopia. Although we live in a region with abundant groundwater and rainfall - around 2800 mm of rain per year - water can still be scarce. That is why we at Desta's Coffee attach great importance to the sustainable treatment and use of water. Our aim is to develop systems that protect the environment and provide the surrounding communities with safe access to clean water. Our systems should inspire and enable the surrounding population to optimize their own water resources with the simplest of means.

A key component of our “water strategy” is the use of groundwater through boreholes. These wells make it possible to extract water from deeper layers of the earth. This makes a reliable water supply in Ethiopia possible in the first place. Our specially constructed catchment basins and water reservoirs collect and store rainwater. These reservoirs help to bridge periods of drought and secure the water requirements of our farms and communities.
Irrigation and drinking water supply - efficient use and filtration
For the irrigation of our fields, we rely on innovative system solutions that minimize water consumption and maximize efficiency. Drip irrigation and other modern techniques ensure that each plant receives exactly the amount of water it needs. At the same time, we develop filter systems that treat rainwater and groundwater to provide clean drinking water for the local community.
Wastewater treatment - more than just reuse and environmental protection
Wastewater treatment also plays a central role in our water management. We are working to treat wastewater in such a way that it can be safely reused or returned to nature. In doing so, we take great care not to pollute the environment more than necessary. It is important to us to respect the natural water cycles. Our active systems help to ensure consistently good water quality and prevent water pollution.
