Food Security and Nutrition
In a world where food security is becoming increasingly important, we at Desta's Coffee are committed to sustainable and decentralised systems. Our vision is not only to guarantee food security, but also to raise awareness of a balanced and varied diet - especially among children as they grow up.
Decentralised systems - the future of food production
Around 80-85% of the Ethiopian population are smallholder farmers. Many of them are dedicated to centralised agriculture. This often results in a one-sided supply of food. We want to consciously break this pattern by focusing on decentralised systems. These enable us to grow and distribute a greater variety of food. We promote the creation of allotment gardens in which different types of vegetables, fruit and herbs thrive. In this way, we create examples of sustainable and diversified agriculture and actively contribute to making food production in Ethiopia fit for the future.

Gardens and flowers - food security and diversity
Our community gardens play a central role in our food security strategy. Not only do we grow different varieties of fruit and vegetables, we also create a habitat for bees and other insects. These little helpers are essential for the pollination of plants and thus for the survival of all species. Our gardens are not only the source of fresh and healthy food. They also offer plenty of space for open exchange, where we share valuable knowledge about sustainable cultivation methods with the community.

Awareness of nutrition - the basics for health and development
A balanced and nutritious diet is essential for the healthy development of the human body, especially in children. Unfortunately, knowledge of nutritional science is often lacking in Ethiopia. The population lacks the awareness that almost all agricultural products available in Ethiopia could thrive optimally. At Desta's Coffee, we are committed to raising awareness in communities and showing people how they can directly influence their health by growing and consuming a wide range of foods. Our bountiful allotments are a testament to the benefits of a nutritious and varied diet.
A role model for millions - learning by example
As well as ensuring food security for our community, we want to create a model that can be adapted by millions of smallholder farmers across Ethiopia.
Our approaches to food production show that it is possible to ensure a sustainable and diverse diet through decentralised systems. And this not only ensures the health of the population, but also the diversity of our ecosystem.
