Wildlife - Preserving the fascinating diversity of the Kaffa Highlands

Our region is a treasure trove of biodiversity. A unique diversity that we want to protect and preserve.

The fascination of the rainforest

The highlands of Kaffa are known for their rich wildlife and unspoilt rainforests. Here we find some of the most impressive and rare species that our planet is home to. Biodiversity is an important indicator of the health of our ecosystem.

Species extinction and industrial agriculture

Species extinction is a major challenge that also affects our region. The loss of habitats due to industrial agriculture has a serious impact on biodiversity. Around 1 million species are threatened with extinction worldwide. The destruction of habitats through intensive agriculture contributes significantly to this problem.

In Ethiopia, around 40% of natural forests were cut down between 2000 and 2010. As a result, the habitats of countless species are severely threatened. The situation is becoming increasingly acute. Not least due to widespread agricultural expansion. The use of pesticides and chemical fertilisers is further exacerbating the situation.

Coexistence as a foundation

At Desta's Coffee, we are committed to the sustainable coexistence of agriculture and wilderness. We believe that it is possible to work productively while protecting flora and fauna.

  • Habitat conservation: We have taken conservation measures to protect the habitats of endangered species and not interfere with their ways of life.
  • Sustainable farming methods: Our farm is organised in such a way that our work has a minimal impact on the environment. As an organic farm, we deliberately avoid the use of chemicals such as pesticides and rely on methods that promote and preserve biodiversity.
  • Utilisation of farm animals in balance: We keep farm animals such as cattle and chickens which, in our opinion, are also part of a functioning ecosystem. These animals support natural fertilisation and help to maintain soil quality. Through integrative and sustainable methods, we ensure that the presence of farm animals does not conflict with the preservation of natural biodiversity, but works harmoniously with it.
  • Research and education: We work with local conservation organisations to monitor the impact of our work on flora and fauna. We also work actively to educate and raise awareness in the community.
  • Establishing protected areas: We have designated special protected areas to conserve the habitats of endemic and endangered species and safeguard their natural habitat.
  • Promoting biodiversity: By preserving natural forest areas and promoting diverse plant life, we are creating a healthy habitat for Ethiopia's diverse wildlife.
  • Collaboration with experts: We work closely with conservation experts and local organisations to continuously improve our concepts and ensure that our measures meet only the highest standards.

Our commitment to protecting wildlife in the Kaffa Highlands is evident in all aspects of our work. We recognise the immense importance of biodiversity to the balance of our natural world and are committed to ensuring that our farming not only respects wildlife, but actively protects and promotes it. Our aim is to create a model of sustainable agriculture that is in harmony with the impressive diversity of wildlife in our region and contributes to the conservation of this unique ecosystem.
