Environmental Quantification
We create transparency in the coffee value chain together with Bühler AG.
Together with Bühler AG, we have analysed and quantified the CO2 emissions in our coffee value chain. This enables us to show how our approach to reduce our CO2 emissions compares to ‘conventional coffee producers’. This analysis confirms our strong commitment to environmental friendliness and sustainability and emphasises our contribution to a more environmentally conscious coffee production.
The challenge of CO2 quantification
The coffee value chain is complex and involves many different stages, each of which has a different environmental impact.
These phases include:
- Coffee cultivation: the use of chemicals, irrigation techniques and agricultural practices affect the environmental impact during coffee cultivation.
- Transport: The routes and means of transport used to deliver our coffee bean harvest from the farm to the processing facilities and on to the consumer play a significant role.
- Processing and roasting: The processing of our organic coffee, including roasting and packaging, also contributes to the overall environmental impact.
- Packaging: The way in which our coffee is packaged can also have an impact on the environment. Especially in terms of packaging materials as well as waste and recycling management.
Our partnership with Bühler AG
Our collaboration with Bühler AG enables us to analyse all relevant factors in our value chain in detail. Bühler AG offers comprehensive services to quantify the environmental impact of products. With Bühler AG's extensive expertise, we can collect precise data on our CO2 emissions at every stage of our coffee production and analyse them in a targeted manner.
The complexity of ecosystems
We are aware that measuring CO2 emissions is only part of the environmental balance. The ecosystem in which we work is characterised by numerous interactions that cannot always be fully reflected in figures.
Although we are critical of focussing too narrowly on CO2 measurement, Bühler AG's analysis provides us with valuable insights into the environmental impact of our processes. It helps us to identify weak points and make targeted improvements.
Clear results
The detailed analysis has shown that our coffee has a significantly lower environmental impact than ‘conventional coffee’. Two factors stand out:
- Reduction of CO2 emissions: Our sustainable farming methods, avoidance of chemical fertilisers, optimisation of transport routes and means and our advanced packaging solutions have resulted in our coffee's CO2 emissions being reduced by over 90% compared to ‘conventional coffee’.
- Transparency and traceability: We are able to transparently present the results of our CO2 quantification and prove that our measures actually contribute to a significant reduction in environmental impact.
